WATCH. DR. WILLIAMS ON MSNBC

Dr. Brian Williams joined Nicole Wallace to discuss the epidemic of gun violence and what motivated his run for congress.

WHY I’M RUNNING FOR CONGRESS

I’m running for Congress because I believe every Texan should have equal opportunity to thrive. But with an epidemic of gun violence that is the leading cause of death for American children; with healthcare that is out of reach for millions in need; and with ongoing attacks on reproductive freedoms from extremist Republicans, Texans are suffering.

As a trauma surgeon, I’ve operated on countless victims of gun violence, and had to tell too many parents that they would never again see their children alive. I’ve operated on patients with avoidable illnesses and injuries who simply could not afford the preventative care they needed. And I’ve operated on women facing death due to reproductive emergencies, a reality that has only become more common now that women have been stripped of the right to make their own healthcare decisions.

Throughout my career as a surgeon, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of bad policy on my patients. We need bold leaders in Congress with the courage to stand up to powerful interests in Washington to save lives. And we need someone in DC who can speak from personal experience about what weapons of war do to human bodies.

In short, we need to send the first trauma surgeon to Congress.

My campaign is about creating and supporting communities where every Texan can thrive. To learn more about what motivates me to lay down my scalpel and step up to represent my community in Congress, I invite you to read about the specific policies I will champion. Together, we can create life-saving change.

Onward,
Dr. Brian Williams

DR. BRIAN WILLIAMS WILL BE THE FIRST TRAUMA SURGEON IN CONGRESS

As an Air Force Officer, Brian trained on weapons of war, and he knows they have no place in our streets. As a trauma surgeon, he's seen what these guns do to bodies, and he's running for Congress because the crisis is only getting worse.

ABOUT ME

As a child, I watched with pride as my father put on his Air Force uniform, and his commitment to service inspired me to follow a similar path. I am a first-generation college graduate who attended the United States Air Force Academy where I graduated with a degree in aeronautical engineering. I served on active duty directing classified military programs before I answered the call to medicine.

After completing my medical residency at Harvard, and my fellowship in trauma surgery at Emory University, my wife and I moved to Dallas so that I could work at Parkland Hospital. As a safety-net hospital, I could spend my career providing healthcare to everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, immigration status, or ability to pay.

It was at Parkland Hospital, one summer night, that my life changed forever. In 2016, I led the trauma team that treated Dallas police officers shot in ambush at a peaceful protest downtown, three of whom died on my watch. That night almost broke me, but I was eventually transformed and inspired to pursue service outside of the operating room.

I went on to serve as the Chair of the Dallas Citizens Police Review Board, helping to bridge the divide between police officers and our community; to help open a new trauma center at the University of Chicago on the city’s Southside; and to work in DC as a health policy advisor for Senator Chris Murphy and later to then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Mine has been a transformative journey, and I am still in pursuit of greater ways to serve.

My heart is in East Dallas where I live with my wife of 18 years, our 13-year-old daughter, and our two loveable dogs – Moe and Disco. Now, I’m running for Congress to represent the community I call home and continue my legacy of service to our country.
